The winter winds are steadily approaching, and while you may have the urge to cozy up on your couch with your favorite holiday movie playing on TV, it’s important to take the time and ensure that your home is ready to withstand the cold weather as well. At Gemcraft Homes, our incredible team works day in and day out to ensure that every home we build is crafted to the highest standard, but it’s never a bad idea to take a few preventative measures in your home to make sure it’s ready for winter—so read on to find our top tips to prepare your home for freezing temperatures this winter.

Perform a routine maintenance check

No matter the season, performing regular maintenance checks is the best way to ensure that you are doing everything you can to keep your Gemcraft home as safe as possible for you and your loved ones. First, you’ll want to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly. Then, you’ll want to make sure that your furnace is good to go before the first winter storm. If you haven’t had to turn it on yet, you’ll want to be sure you let the heat run for a few hours simply to check that everything is working correctly. Another great thing to add to your list would be to reverse the direction of your ceiling fans so they’re running clockwise. Doing this brings the warm air that is rising toward your ceiling back down and spreading it out throughout the room.

Prepare your yard

Your landscaping could also use a little extra attention as the winter season picks up, so you’ll want to set aside some time to walk through your yard and see if there are any trouble spots that need to be taken care of. If you see anything that could be a rotted tree branch or perhaps a tree that is slightly leaning to one side, you may want to call in a professional to come take a look. They’ll be able to trim back any large trees near your home or power lines that could potentially cause an issue if any severe winter storms pass through the area. This is also a great time to clean out your gutters if you’re able to and you have a family member, friend or neighbor who can help.
