As soon as the summer months are in sight, our minds tend to be drawn toward our next great adventure. Before we get lost in vacation planning and packing, though, it’s important to make sure that our homes are prepared to be on their own for the time being. At Gemcraft Homes, we’ve put together our ultimate home checklist to ensure that your home will be one thing you won’t have to worry about on your next getaway.

#1- Clean out the fridge

One step you won’t want to miss before you head out the door on your next vacation is cleaning out your fridge. Fresh produce is typically good for just a few days, and dairy products usually have a short shelf life. Once you’ve finished going through all of your refrigerated goods and tossing the ones that are sure to spoil, don’t forget to take out the trash to keep your home as fresh as possible while you’re away.

#2- Unplug your small appliances

Even when you’re not using them, smaller appliances such as toasters, coffee makers or blenders can still be drawing some electricity when they’re plugged in. To ensure that you’re saving as much energy as possible, it’s best to unplug these items while you’re on vacation—and, it’s also not a bad idea to unplug any televisions, computers or even your Wi-Fi router while you’re at it.

#3- Check your thermostat

Keeping with the theme of energy savings, setting your thermostat higher than the typical temperature during the summertime can ensure that it’s not working overtime while you’re not at your home. With the smart thermostat in your Gemcraft Home, you can also keep an eye on your home’s temperature from the smartphone app to see if you need to adjust anything while you’re away for optimal energy efficiency. With the smart home security features within your Gemcraft Home, you can also check-in on your home at any time while you’re away to ensure that everything is in order.

#4- Take care of your house plants

Having house plants is a great way to bring some natural elements into your home design, but it also means that when you leave your home for a longer period of time, you’ll need to make sure that they will be taken care of until you return. For cacti, they won’t need as much water as other plants, so watering them before you leave for a week-long vacation will ensure that they are good to go until you return. Another option is to reach out to a neighbor, friend or family member to look after your plants while you’re away—or, there are a number of self-watering products on the market today that you can also look into.

#5- Give your home a clean sweep

There’s nothing worse than coming home from a relaxing vacation and remembering that you left a mess behind you. Even though it may not be the most fun thing to do before leaving for vacation, giving your home a quick clean before you leave will inevitably leave you feeling better as soon as you return.

Keeping your Gemcraft Home safe

Our team knows how important your home is to you, and when you follow this checklist, you can rest assured that your home will be taken care of.
